Hello and welcome...
You're here because you most likely clicked on a link that led you here…and I bet you're glad you did...
Welcome, welcome.
Today, I'm blogging about: Chronicles of Teacher (Corper) Nan...
So presently, I'm observing the mandatory one year National Youth Service Corps, NYSC in Edo state. And I'm serving in a secondary school, like I wanted to π
NYSC is a program set up by the Nigerian government during the military regime to involve Nigerian graduates in the development of the country.
The primary purpose of the scheme is to inculcate the spirit of selfless service to the community in Nigerian youths and to emphasize the spirit of oneness and unity, irrespective of cultural or social differences.
One of these days, I'll settle down to write about my experience in this season...
And I've learnt a lot from this season and these students…and I mean a lot. From teaching in itself to work ethics, and especially parenting. There's a whole lot I'd like to post but the posts are still in the oven...
But today, lemme share something that happened few weeks ago...π
So, I give my students assignments every week, so they can at least open their books over the weekend and read.
Then one of them, a very competitive and intelligent student, scored 1/5...
He came to the staff room to appeal that he repeats the assignment...
I refused. Told him I had marked and recorded. He pleaded, I insisted. Then he said he'd do it in the staff room so I see that he won't copy from someone else...
I insisted still, told him I'll only mark it as 'seen' and not score him. He went quiet for a while and said he'll go ahead to repeat it and submit.
It was at that point I decided to score him 4/5…
Few minutes later, he was back with the correction and when I opened the note to mark, there was a message for me...
Truth be told, after reading it I was tempted to score him 5/5, but I had to be fair to others that were correct in one attempt.
But mehn, I learnt from him...
First, negotiation skills are relevant. Learn them. He could have given up when I said no the first time but he didn't.
Two, be thankful. The note he wrote was what made me want to score him 5/5, but for the sake of being fair to others.
Then, the major lesson for me: if you pray or work for a bakery and get bread, don't settle. I mean, don't settle for something that doesn't look like your prayers, keep pushing and praying.
I mean, he's a straight A student. I teach them 3 different subjects and he submits a marking scheme. So 1/5 was definitely gonna be a stain on his record and he wasn't having that...mehn, such tenacity!
Now, there were students in that same class that scored 0/5 o, and some didn't even attempt the assignment. But students are different from students.
This is the end of my story π
Have you been blessed today?
PS: I'll come back with a proper post about my service year soon. For now, use this one take 'hold body'.
Love and Light,
Nancita✨
